This surf camp really does sit directly on the beach. As soon as you exit the door, you’re feet will step into the warm sand of Praia Fonte da Telha.
The Beachfront Surf Camp Caparica sits on the sands edge of Praia Fonte da Telha in an area named Costa da Caparica. The camps are run by Wonder Season and have been made available for years through Pure Surf Camps. The camps location next to the beach, and vicinity to Lisbon, have made this camp very popular amongst surf travellers visiting Portugal. The mixture of great surf and surf courses, the nearby beach and ocean, great nightlife and the options of sightseeing and partying in Lisbon have contributed to hundreds of our guests leaving extremely happy with their surf holiday choice.
The camp sits 30 minutes south of Lisbon with around 13km of beautiful golden sand beaches along the Costa da Caparica coast to find your perfect break every morning. This stretch of beach can cater to the surfer who is enjoying their first day out, to a seasoned pro simultaneously; depending on what peak you choose to surf.
The surf camp itself has had a lot of love and painstaking work put into it. The furniture was hand made by a local artist and is individually crafted for every room of the camp. There is plenty of space for everyone staying to either find a quiet spot to retreat too, our join your fellow campers for social afternoons and evenings. You can even check the waves from the terrace while eating breakfast.
Costa da Caparica
The never-ending coast of Caparica offers 13km of sandy beaches with more than a few surf spots along the way. The camp sits next to a stunning beach called Praia Fonte da Telha.
The surf spots in Caparica include both beach and point breaks, and depending on what break you go to you will find waves that are ideal for your skill level. The crew know all the best spots, and find the best waves that utilise the powerful Atlantic Ocean swell and predictable wind, while keeping away from the crowds.
The numerous cafes and restaurants in the surrounding area offer splendid traditional Portuguese cuisine for a very small price. If you want to take an afternoon trip to Lisbon, the city of 7 hills, you can get there easily on the bus and ferry, or by car. When there, you can check out numerous historical sites and tourist attractions, trendy restaurants and bars, and if you decide to stay a little later, you’ll be blown away by the amazing nightlife the city has to offer.
Transpraia: Beach Mini-Train
Along the coast you’ll find a cute little train that takes you all the way from Fonte de Telha to Costa Caparica. Stopping at all the hard to reach beaches and making it a breeze to explore the coastline without a car. Its a great way to spend the afternoon while stopping of at a few of the local beach bars along the way.
Every Thursday there is a famous event called the 'All you can Eat and Drink buffet' for only 10€. Alongside the local specialty Bacalao you will find are large assortment of delicious local desserts.
This is a great spot to get souvenirs and gifts for people at home and starts at 9 o’clock, every Sunday. You’ll find all sorts of interesting knick-knacks and if you're lucky some hidden treasure. From the hostel, this market is easily accessed by taking the mini-train, which will take about 20 minutes, or driving, which takes about 10.
Decio has been the manager of Beachfront Surf Camp for the last 3 years. He still takes the surf lessons and as he is a local, will be able to give you some insider info about secret surf spots and the conditions to get you to the best waves. Back at the camp he’ll also be more than happy to help with any question you might have about Lisbon, or the surrounding area.
Double room with bathroom
These double rooms are ideal for couples, each including a king size bed and private bathroom. A local artist has hand crafted the furniture giving the room a comfortable, yet stylish ambience. All the double rooms lead directly onto the large terrace so you can watch the majestic daily sunset over the waves with your loved one.
Double Room with shared bathroom
The double rooms with shared bathroom are ideal for families or groups of 3, as they include one double bed, and one single, with plenty of space to store luggage and surf gear. These also have direct access to the terrace and the stunning ocean views.
The 4-Person bedroom is designed to cater to small groups of travelling friends who want to go on a surf trip together.
These rooms are spacious, with more than enough space for you surf gear and luggage, and extremely comfortable to get you well rested for your next surf adventure.
In the dorm there are 6 beds where you will meet surfers, backpackers and travellers from around the world with whom you can share stories and life experiences, or just talk about the days surf session.

The Beachfront Surf Camp Caparica contains a large kitchen, numerous bathrooms and a large living area with TV, DVD, Playstation and sofas that all camp guests can use.
Everyday breakfast is also served in the living area, and great news for both the sunrise surfer and the late sleeper, breakfast is available till everyone has been fed.

At Beachfront Surf Camp Caparica everyone gets the chance to feel what surfing is all about.
Both the 10 & 16 hour Surf Courses run from Monday to Friday. The day usually begins with you getting into the water shortly after breakfast, but if the conditions are preferable in the afternoon then the course time will shift making sure you get the best waves possible.
Both courses aim to get you feeling comfortable in the ocean & catching waves. Each lesson consists of going out to the most suitable spots for your surf level, and developing your take off, then progressing to riding along the face, catching bigger waves, and starting to work on turns.
The coaches bring together years of experience of both surfing themselves, and coaching. They know the coast and the waves in and out which means you’ll be surfing the best waves, that perfectly align with your skill level. Because of this you’ll also be progressing quickly and surfing consistently better breaks as the course progresses. Safety and fun are paramount to any surf course you choose, and each course aims to challenge, but not overwhelm, or bore you.
Equipment is included in the course cost, however is only available to be used during the course times. If you want to surf solo before or after the course, you are more than welcome to rent gear from us. If you are still unsure whether you want to commit to a 10-hour course, and would like to try a single day, the price for one, 2-hour surf lesson, is 30 € and includes board and wetsuit rental.
Those that are more experienced and just want to get on with it and go surf, board and wetsuit rental is available, plus a quick pointer to the best spots in the area.
The Portuguese Rita actually stood up on her first wave in Holland, but has been surfing the Atlantic for the last 10 years and has learned the ins and outs of the coast. Rita splits the class up making sure everyone gets the help they need and progresses quickly while having a lot of fun.
Paulinho is a born and raised local of Costa da Caparica and life is surfing. His relaxed and funny attitude means you’ll be feeling ultra relaxed in the water, or laughing hysterically. He’s been surfing the coast for more than 20 years so he’ll mould you into a real surfer in no time!
As beautiful as surfing is, it takes place in the ocean and nature is unpredictable. It can often get pretty hard to give direct feedback and implement this advice on the beach. While surfing you really need to focus on what you are doing with so many variables like waves, other surfers and your own board. We have taught surfing for over 10 years and know the difficulties, especially when you are just beginning. To accelerate your progress with rapid improvement we have a new training technique in the Beachfront Surf Camp Caparica for you - General Video Coaching!
You'll get filmed once a week in your surf course and after editing it will be analized with your specific surf group. Even if it isn't yourself on the specific wave, common mistakes can be adressed for every student. You'll experience a much faster learning curve and be highly motivated practice these tips in your next session.
Beachfront Surf Camp Caparica sits directly on Fonte de Telha and offers amazing surf for beginners as well as advanced surfers. The surf courses that take place in summer utilise the most fitting waves and move north or south depending on the surf conditions to spots like Paraíso or São João. There are epic waves all along the coast, with empty line-ups and countless beachside restaurants to recharge after your lesson.
Around Lisbon you are also inundated with beach and point breaks where you can find your perfect wave. If you are looking for even more variety you can head further north towards Ericeira or Peniche. Both are world famous surf areas with Peniche hosting the ASP world tour at a break called Supertubos.
Water temperature isn’t tropical. Average in summer is between 17° and 20°C so a 3/2mm full wetsuit is perfect. In the off-season a 4/3mm will suffice.
Tasty breakfast buffet included
For a successful day in the surf, you need energy. To get that energy a delicious and nutritious breakfast goes a long way. Included in the camp price is a breakfast buffet that includes bread, cheese, cold cuts and spreads as well as fresh fruit and muesli. Freshly brewed coffee and tea are also available.
Dinner & BBQ
In the evenings you will be spoiled with 3-course Portuguese cuisine including local wine. Safest option is to book dinner before you depart so they can prepare for your arrival. 59€ will get you 4 evenings dinner, with 2 nights consisting of a BBQ. Beachfront Surf Camp Caparica uses fresh, local vegetables and locally sourced fish and meat. This is the easiest option giving you more time to relax and enjoy the evening sun while toasting to a successful days surfing.
Restaurants & Bars
Beachfront Surf Camp Caparica also has numerous small restaurants and bars in it surroundings providing great local meals and snacks, at a great price.
At our beachfront surf camp Caparica you can attend yoga classes. Stretching and relaxing are essential in getting fit for surfing which is why yoga is the perfect addition to your surf lessons. Starting from a minimum of three participants, you can enjoy a class for 10 € per lesson.

Lisbon Nightlife Tour
At the end of every week you can join in on an evening trip to Lisbon to experience it like the locals. After the short trip to the city, the evening starts with dinner at Barrio Alto, then stops of at few local bars and finishes on a rooftop bar, where you can dance with a cocktail in hand all while gazing over the skyline of Lisbon. The tour costs 15 € and includes transfers, club entry and a shot.
A trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sintra is also available. This city is rich in history and culture and once there, you will see amazing castles, forts, secret gardens and palaces. The town is also set amongst some of the most spectacular scenery in the region. For this trip you'll have to organize yourself but it's definitely worth doing.
Beach Train Tour
The Beach Train Tour includes an adventurous trip on the legendary mini beach train. You discover the picturesque coastline of Costa da Caparica with its amazing natural sand dunes. The train ride is just along the beach, perfect for a day of playing beach volleyball, chess and enjoying various relaxing activities.
If you're a wine lover then you should definitely check out the local wineries around Lisbon. From red to white or a Portuguese Vino Verde (green wine) there is a wide range of wines to discover.

An Airport shuttle directly to the Beachfront Surf Camp Caparica upon arrival or departure costs 35€ and seats 4 passengers. If 4 of you go it will be 8.75€ per person.
You can make your own way to the camp from Lisbon airport using the metro, ferry and bus. Just take the Green Metro Line or the Aerobus to Cais do Sodré. From there you get on the Ferry to Casilhas. Here you can jump on Bus #127 which takes you directly to Fonte da Telha.
We recommend renting a car! In Portugal there are very cheap rental cars available that start at 80€ per week. At Sunny Cars you'll find the cheapest rental cars around! Getting a rental car will allow you to spontaneously explore the coastline or nearby Lisbon. It will also give you the freedom to take early morning drives up the coast to go to your favourite surf spot and be first in the water.
